Who needs a visa for India
Most foreign nationals need a visa to enter India. For eligible travellers, the fastest route is the India e-Visa, an electronic visa the Indian Government introduced in 2014 to simplify and speed up the process of obtaining the visa needed to enter the country for tourism, business or medical treatment.
Citizens of a wide range of countries can apply for the e-Visa entirely online, without visiting an embassy. Use the checker above to confirm your nationality is eligible. If it is, you can apply straight away; if it isn't, you'll need to arrange a visa through an Indian mission.
Types of India e-Visa
India offers several types of electronic visa depending on your reason for travelling. They differ in how long they stay valid and how long you may stay in the country:
- e-Tourist Visa, a multiple-entry visa for tourism, available as a 30-day, one-year or five-year document depending on your plans.
- e-Business Visa, a multiple-entry visa for business activities, valid for one year from the date of grant, allowing continuous stays of up to 180 days per visit.
- e-Medical Visa, a multiple-entry visa for medical treatment in India, valid for one year from the date of arrival.
- e-Medical Attendant Visa, issued to those accompanying a holder of an e-Medical Visa.
- e-Conference Visa, a single-entry visa for delegates attending seminars, conferences or workshops.
How long the e-Visa is valid
Validity depends on the visa type. Eligible travellers may apply online from a minimum of 4 days before arrival, within a 120-day window. The 30-day e-Tourist Visa is valid for 30 days from your first arrival in India, with multiple entries. The one-year and five-year e-Tourist Visas allow multiple entries, with a maximum stay of 180 days per calendar year.
Important: your passport must remain valid for at least six months (180 days) from your planned date of arrival in India, and have at least two blank pages.
What you need to apply
Before you start, have the following ready:
